What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond insulin(hormone), resulting in high level of sugar or glucose (hyperglycemia) in blood and metabolic disturbances.
Whenever we eat carbohydrate, our digestive system breaks down it into glucose, which helps to keep our body energetic. Insulin produced by the gland pancreas plays an important role in balancing glucose level because it stimulates the body to make proper use of glucose. Whenever the amount of glucose or sugar increases, insulin is released to normalize the sugar level. However, in diabetic patient glucose level can not be normalized, which leads to high level of glucose in the body.
What is pancreas?
The pancreas is an organ, which is located behind the stomach and is responsible for controlling sugar level. Special cells called beta cells release a hormone called insulin in the digestive system, which helps stabilize sugar level.
What are the types of Diabetes?
Diabetes 1- Diabetes 1 is a condition when our body does not produce insulin or produces very less insulin which is commonly found in children but can occur at any stages of life.In diabetes 1, our immune system attacks or kills beta cells, which produce insulin. As a result of glucose level increases in the body instead of using it in the form of energy. It is also called as juvenile diabetes.
Diabetes 2- Most common form of the disease, affecting 90% of people with diabetes is type 2 diabetes. In this condition, a body can not use insulin properly. As a result, glucose level builds up in the blood instead of being used as a source of energy. It affects adults but cal also affects children.
